Self-Love Photoshoot by the Sea | Women's Portrait Photography in Plymouth
As a photographer, one of the greatest privileges of my work is documenting women at meaningful moments in their lives.
This self-love photoshoot was a beautiful reminder that portrait photography can be about so much more than creating beautiful images—it can be about celebrating who you've become.
We met before dawn for a sunrise self-love portrait session by the sea. At 5am, the beach was peaceful and almost empty, save for a few sea swimmers enjoying the calm morning water.
Although the sun never made an appearance (blame the British summer!), the soft light created the perfect atmosphere for this women's portrait photography session. The sea was still, the air was quiet, and there was a sense of calm that reflected my client's story perfectly.
Creating a Self-Love Portrait Session That Reflected Her Journey
Before every empowerment photoshoot, I spend time getting to know the woman behind the images. Together, we explore what she wants her photographs to say and how we can create images that feel authentic to her.
For this session, we carefully selected several outfits that represented different chapters of her life.
One of the most meaningful looks featured a headscarf inspired by her time living in Morocco. More than a styling choice, it symbolised a period of immense personal growth and self-discovery.
Over the last two winters, Morocco became a place where she learned to put herself first.
A place where she learned to teach yoga, surf, skateboard and embrace new experiences.
A place where she discovered that she was more than the version of herself that had spent years prioritising everyone else's needs.
The Ocean as a Symbol of Strength and Self-Discovery
Throughout our conversations, the ocean appeared again and again in her story.
It became a place where she found peace.
A place where she could slow down, reconnect with herself and return home to who she truly was.
Photographing her in and around the water felt like a natural extension of that journey.
Some images were created standing at the shoreline, while others involved stepping into the sea itself. There was a beautiful balance of strength and softness throughout the session—a combination that perfectly reflected the woman she had become.
As a portrait photographer, these are the stories I love capturing most. Not just how someone looks, but who they are beneath the surface.
More Than a Photoshoot
This self-love photoshoot wasn't about changing herself.
It wasn't about becoming more confident, more beautiful or more worthy.
It was about recognising that she already was.
After viewing her images, she shared these words with me:
"This year I became my centre, I became my home."
And later:
"You captured me. You captured me exposed but at peace. Seen but okay, comfortable with it. Intimate but not sexual. Strong and feminine."
For me, that is exactly what self-love portrait photography is about.
Creating space for women to be seen.
To celebrate their story.
To honour their growth.
And to document the version of themselves they've worked so hard to become.
