Maternity Photoshoot Poses: 5 Natural Ideas That Don't Feel Awkward

One of the biggest worries I hear from expectant mums before their maternity photoshoot is:

"I'm not photogenic."
"I don't know how to pose."
"I'm worried it'll feel awkward."

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.

The good news? You don't need to arrive knowing a single pose.

My job is to guide you through every movement naturally, so your photographs feel effortless, flattering and authentic to you.

The Secret to Beautiful Maternity Photos Isn't Complicated Posing

The most beautiful maternity photographs aren't created with complicated poses.

They're created by slowing down, finding beautiful light, and making small adjustments that feel comfortable.

A gentle hand resting on your bump.

Turning your body slightly towards the light.

Looking down at your baby for just a moment.

A relaxed smile as you think about meeting them.

Sometimes the simplest movements create the most meaningful photographs.

My Favourite Natural Maternity Poses

1. Holding Your Bump

This is one of the most timeless maternity poses because it naturally draws attention to the incredible journey your body is on. I often encourage mums to relax their shoulders, breathe deeply and simply connect with their baby.

2. Walking Towards the Camera

Walking creates natural movement and helps you forget about the camera altogether. It also allows dresses to flow beautifully and creates photographs full of life.

3. Looking Down at Your Baby

You don't always need to look into the camera.

Some of the most emotional photographs come from quiet moments where you're simply thinking about the little person you're about to meet.

4. With Your Partner

Your maternity session isn't just about your bump.

It's about your growing family.

Whether it's a cuddle, holding hands or laughing together, these photographs often become favourites because they tell more of your story.

5. With Older Children

If you're already a mum, involving siblings creates beautifully genuine moments.

Children don't need to stand perfectly still.

A cuddle, a kiss on your bump or holding your hand tells the story perfectly.

You Don't Need a Fancy Location

Some of my favourite maternity photographs are created in a beautifully simple studio.

Without distractions, the focus stays exactly where it should...

On you.

Simple styling, beautiful light and natural guidance create timeless photographs that you'll still love decades from now.

You Don't Need to Know How to Pose

This is probably the most important thing I can tell you.

You don't need experience.

You don't need confidence in front of a camera.

You don't need Pinterest-perfect poses memorised.

I'll guide you through every step, making small adjustments that flatter your body and feel natural, so you can relax and enjoy celebrating this incredible chapter of your life.
