There’s something incredibly special about photographing couples at this stage of their journey—engaged, excited for the future, and already beginning to step into the feeling of their wedding day.
Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a couple I’ll also be photographing for their elopement this year. They wanted a relaxed engagement-style couple’s photoshoot before the big day, with a focus on something natural, romantic, and a little bit wild. Their vision was a forest woodland location with water, somewhere they could feel completely themselves.
Bellever Forest on Dartmoor was the perfect choice.
A place I hadn’t photographed in a while, it gave exactly what we needed—soft light through the trees, open woodland paths, and calm water that reflected the surrounding landscape. It felt quiet, atmospheric, and completely fitting for their story.
From the beginning, the focus of this shoot was connection over perfection.
I guided them with gentle posing and direction where needed, but the aim was always to let them settle into each other naturally. The best images often come in the in-between moments—the laughter, the quiet pauses, the way they instinctively lean into each other when they forget the camera is there.
That balance is always important in my work: direction that gives confidence, with space to simply be.
Their dog, Diego, joined us for the session, which made it even more meaningful. He’ll also be part of their elopement day later this year, so it felt important to include him in this part of their story too.
Including pets in couple and engagement photography always adds another layer of personality and emotion. It turns the session into something that reflects real life, not just a photoshoot.
