Top portrait locations in autumn

Autumn has to be my favourite time of year to photograph in when on location. It can still be warm and the lighting can be amazing as the sun starts to dip when coming into shorter days giving much softer light.

It’s also one of my most popular times to photograph with clients because of these reasons.

For me it’s all about the light and the colour tones that autumn offers and the following locations offer great backdrop ideas for an autumnal session.

1. Woods

Probably the most obvious location but that’s because it ticks a lot on the autumn list. Tall trees I find fascinating and make for a dramatic photo. If you want to see a session from the Woods, check it out here.

2. Park

First of all, fallen leaves are a great idea. They set the scene, colour tones and can be fun to play in too. No doubt you’ll find lots of fallen leaves in a Park location. With grass, playing areas, gardens and trees – there’s a lot to use here to create the scene.

3. Moors

Being from Devon I can’t not include this location. It may not be available to everyone but investing in a session with me in the South West can mean experiencing a location like this. The textures of the moss and rocks are perfect for this time of year, the slightly dried out look of the grass and trees with the oversized rocks and rolling landscapes make for a very unique setting. If you want to see a session from the Moors, check it out here.

4. Water

For autumn shoots water locations may seem more obvious for ponds, lakes and not the beach. But a coastal shoot can still be just as nice outside of summer. (Plus there’s less people and better light!)

For a combination of woods, moorland and coastal, check out this session.

5. Urban

Who say’s it has to be all about leaves and trees? This is probably my favourite setting for a shoot. Using buildings, streets, concrete jungles to create a unique and modern look for your photos. Check out this urban session.

6. Inside

Don’t forget we can also shoot indoors. Setting a scene in the home or creating a set in the studio.

7. Colours

Think browns, beige, deep reds, oranges and white. Warm earthy tones if you really want an autumn looking photo, you can also opt for darker tones for a stylish look. My style guide is available with all portrait bookings to help you prepare for your session. Bringing location, clothing and colours together. Which can make or break a photo!
