How to Prepare for Your Personal Branding Photoshoot: Everything You Need to Know

Booking a personal branding photoshoot is exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming. What should you wear? How many photographs will you need? Should we photograph in your workplace? What if you hate having your photograph taken?

The good news is that you don't need to have everything figured out before you book.

A successful branding photoshoot isn't about looking like someone else or having the perfect office. It's about creating photographs that genuinely represent you and your business.

Here's everything I'd recommend thinking about before your session.

What Should I Wear for My Branding Session?

The best advice I can give is to wear clothes that feel like you.

If your clients met you tomorrow, would they expect to see you in a bright pink power suit or your favourite pair of jeans and a beautiful knit jumper?

Your branding photographs should feel authentic and align with your business.

A few tips:

  • Choose outfits that reflect your brand colours and style.

  • Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident.

  • Avoid large logos or distracting patterns.

  • Consider bringing two or three outfit changes.

  • Think about where your photographs will be used.

If you're a yoga instructor, your clients may expect relaxed lifestyle imagery. If you're a lawyer or consultant, something more polished may feel appropriate.

Most importantly, don't buy an entirely new wardrobe for your photoshoot unless it's something you'd genuinely wear.

What Images Do I Need for My Business?

This is one of the most important questions to ask yourself before your session.

Think about where you'll be using your photographs over the next six to twelve months.

You might need images for:

  • Your website homepage.

  • About page.

  • Social media.

  • Email newsletters.

  • Press features.

  • Speaking engagements.

  • Marketing materials.

  • Product launches.

  • Podcast appearances.

  • Blog posts.

  • Social media profile pictures.

The most successful branding galleries include a variety of images rather than dozens of slightly different headshots.

Some examples include:

  • Portraits.

  • Behind-the-scenes imagery.

  • Lifestyle photographs.

  • Workspace images.

  • Product or service photographs.

  • Detail shots.

  • Horizontal and vertical compositions for different platforms.

Think about what your audience needs to see in order to trust and understand your business.

How Many Photographs Do I Need?

There isn't one magic number.

Instead, ask yourself:

How often do I market my business?

Someone who posts on Instagram once a week will need fewer photographs than someone launching courses, updating their website regularly or appearing in magazines and podcasts.

A small collection of purposeful images is often more valuable than hundreds of photographs you'll never use.

Quality will always outweigh quantity.

It's also worth remembering that branding imagery should work hard for your business. One photograph can often be used across multiple platforms in different ways.

Can We Photograph at My Workplace?

Absolutely.

In fact, photographing you in your own environment often helps tell a much richer story about your business.

Your workplace could be:

  • Your studio.

  • Your office.

  • A treatment room.

  • A café.

  • Your home workspace.

  • An outdoor location.

  • A hired creative space.

You don't need a Pinterest-perfect office to have beautiful branding photographs. Sometimes the smallest details tell the biggest story.

Showing your clients where and how you work can help them feel more connected to your business before they've even met you.

Should I Bring Props?

Props are wonderful when they genuinely belong in your business.

Think about the tools you use every day.

Some examples might include:

  • Your laptop.

  • Packaging.

  • Fresh flowers.

  • Cameras.

  • Sketchbooks.

  • Products.

  • Coffee mugs.

  • Notebooks.

  • Business cards.

  • Tools of your trade.

The key is to avoid bringing props simply because they're trendy.

Ask yourself:

Would my clients expect to see this when working with me?

If the answer is yes, bring it along.

How Do I Prepare My Business for the Shoot?

Preparation doesn't need to feel complicated.

Before your session, I recommend:

  • Making a list of how you'll use your photographs.

  • Gathering your outfits and props.

  • Creating a Pinterest board if you have ideas.

  • Thinking about your ideal client.

  • Writing down the key messages you want your business to communicate.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want people to feel when they land on my website?

  • What makes my business different?

  • What would I love clients to say after working with me?

These answers will help shape the photographs we create together.

What If I Hate Having My Photograph Taken?

You're not alone.

This is probably one of the biggest concerns I hear from business owners.

Most people don't love having their photograph taken, particularly when the photographs are going to represent their business online.

You don't need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands.

A good branding session shouldn't feel like standing awkwardly in front of a camera for two hours smiling on command.

The experience should feel relaxed, guided and enjoyable. My job as a photographer is to help you feel comfortable, direct you throughout the session and create photographs that feel natural and authentic.

You don't need to become someone else for your branding photographs. You simply need to show up as yourself.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for your personal branding photoshoot doesn't need to feel overwhelming.

The best branding imagery isn't about perfection. It's about creating purposeful photographs that reflect who you are, what you do and the experience you offer your clients.

With a little planning, you'll walk away with a collection of images that can support your business for months to come.

And perhaps most importantly, you'll finally have photographs you're excited to share.
