Burgh Island Photographer | Portraits, Couples, Elopements and Celebrations
Burgh Island is one of the most extraordinary places in Devon to create photographs.
I've photographed there many times over the years, working with women, couples, families and groups who have travelled to the island for all sorts of reasons — from elopements and romantic getaways to birthdays, girls' stays and personal portrait sessions.
For me, photographing at Burgh Island isn't just about creating beautiful photographs of the location. It's about capturing what it felt like to be there.
Whether you're celebrating something, spending time with people you love, or simply want to make the most of an unforgettable stay, a photoshoot can become part of the experience.
Portrait Photography at Burgh Island
Burgh Island is particularly special for portrait photography because there are so many different environments to work with.
You can move from the beach to the gardens, the coastline and the distinctive surroundings of the hotel, creating a gallery that feels varied without having to travel anywhere else.
For women staying at Burgh Island, a portrait session can also be a chance to step away from everyday life for a little while.
You don't need a special occasion.
Sometimes the reason is simply:
I want photographs of myself at this point in my life.
That's something I understand deeply. I've used portrait photography of myself for many years as a way of understanding the different stages of my own life. When I look back at those photographs, I can feel who I was at that particular moment.
That's something I want to create for other women too.
Couples Photography at Burgh Island
You don't have to be getting married to have photographs taken together.
I've photographed couples visiting Burgh Island for romantic breaks, celebrations and time away together.
The island gives you the opportunity to create photographs that feel like part of the trip rather than a formal photoshoot. We can walk, explore, talk, stop for photographs and make use of whatever the island gives us on the day.
It could be an anniversary, a birthday, an engagement, a first trip together or simply a weekend you want to remember.
Elopement + Vow Renewal Photography at Burgh Island
Burgh Island is an incredible setting for an intimate elopement or vow renewal.
I've photographed an many vow renewals and elopement there and know how much character the location brings to the experience. From the arrival on the island to photographs around the hotel and the surrounding coastline, there are so many opportunities to tell the story of the day.
Elopements and vow renewals don't need hundreds of photographs that feel like a traditional wedding.
They can be intimate, personal and completely centred around the two of you.
My approach is to create portraits alongside photographs of the moments, details and surroundings that made your day yours.
Birthday Photography at Burgh Island
A birthday stay at Burgh Island is already something worth remembering.
I've photographed birthday celebrations on the island, creating photographs of the person celebrating as well as the people they've chosen to spend the occasion with.
A portrait session can be a brilliant way to make the most of a milestone birthday — particularly if you've booked Burgh Island as a special experience.
You can dress up, explore the island and create photographs that feel like a celebration rather than simply another birthday photograph.
Girls' Stays & Group Photography
Burgh Island is also a wonderful setting for a girls' trip.
I've photographed groups of women staying on the island together, creating a mixture of group portraits, individual photographs and photographs of everyone enjoying the experience.
It gives you something that phone photographs often don't: everyone gets to be in the picture.
And you can create photographs that feel polished and editorial while still capturing the friendship, fun and personality of the group.
Whether it's a birthday, a hen weekend, a milestone or simply a long-overdue girls' getaway, a photoshoot can become part of the experience.
Self-Love Photography at Burgh Island
You don't need to bring anyone else with you.
A stay at Burgh Island can be the perfect opportunity to have photographs taken just for yourself.
A self-love portrait session gives you space to be photographed without needing to perform for anyone else. It's about creating images that reflect how you see yourself now — not waiting until you look different, feel different or reach a particular milestone.
And there's something particularly powerful about doing that somewhere as extraordinary as Burgh Island.
Why I Love Photographing at Burgh Island
I've photographed at a lot of locations during my 19 years as a photographer, but Burgh Island has a character that makes it particularly memorable.
The island itself becomes part of the photographs.
The sea, the coastline, the architecture, the changing light and the feeling of being somewhere slightly removed from everyday life all contribute to the final gallery.
But most importantly, I've already photographed a variety of people and experiences there.
I know how to work with the location.
I know how to create variety within a session.
And I know that you don't need to be a professional model to look and feel amazing in photographs.
